“SO WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE SOLUTION FOCUSED”? LEADING FROM BEHIND.
CSC staff is trained to utilize SFBT in one on one interactions, working with families, and in community settings. To illustrate the power and potential of integrating SFBT into one’s day life, a worker will ask for a volunteer. The worker will ask the volunteer to stand in front of him/her with their back to the worker. From behind, the worker will extend their arms and hands over the volunteer’s shoulders at ear and eye level. At full stretch, the worker’s two arms will be parallel with about 6 inches apart. The volunteer’s view forward is like looking down a tunnel as the worker’s extended arms are blocking all peripheral vision. The feeling created is tunnel vision – – narrow, closed, frightening in some respects. The volunteer feels there may not be many options to get beyond this tunnel other than what is seen at the finger-tips of the worker and beyond. Down a singular, narrow path. The volunteer’s body may become tight. But, the transformation begins through a series of spontaneous, heart-felt, sometimes light-hearted, fun, open-ended, strength based questions. The volunteer begins to relax with worker’s questions that emphasize the volunteer’s interests, accomplishments, passions, etc. And as the volunteer relaxes, the worker’s arms slowly and gradually open up to full extension. Suddenly the tunnel is gone. Things and people that were not visible because of the extended arms of the worker and the tunnel vision of the volunteer, are suddenly visible.
– THIS SUMMER WE STARTED TO USE SOLUTION FOCUS IN THE COMMUNITY IN SOCIAL CORNERS – – SOLUTION FOCUS ON THE MOVE ON STREET CORNERS, BARBER SHOPS, PLAYGROUNDS AND BASKETBALL COURTS, BUS STOPS. THE RESPONSE HAS BEEN POSITIVE AND DIFFERENT. YOUNG PEOPLE AND PERSONS OF ALL AGES DON’T KNOW QUITE WHAT TO MAKE OF THE OPEN ENDEDS, PROBING QUESTIONS. A DIFFERENT APPROACH. SCRATCHING THE SURFACE. BUILDING A FUTURE DIFFERENT FROM THE PAST.
WE ARE SOLUTION FOCUSED. WE ARE COLLABORATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR COMMUNITIES.
