Lori Kaplan, this year’s honoree to discussed her journey, passion for working on behalf of children and how she carries the legacy of our fore-mothers. She remembered sitting in the Council chambers with our founding mothers advocating for the needs of youth at LAYC.
“Lori is what legends are made of
As we have been writing about recently, we are firm believers that children grow up and thrive (or not) in the context of their environments – families, schools, child care centers, etc. In the coming weeks we will be blogging and releasing data which reflect that while we have made some important changes, we need to do much more to improve the status of children. Since the inception of DC Action for Children 23 years ago, we have seen school reform, implementation of universal pre-k, expansion of Medicaid and evidence-based home visiting and many more victories for children and youth. We proudly continue the work of our fore-mothers and are grateful to work alongside other champions for children like Lori.
In the next two decades our goal is to make even more dramatic changes needed to improve the outcomes of children!”
